B. INTRODUCTION TO MARKET EVIDENCE (C)
a) ABOUT THE PROGRAM
MARKET EVIDENCE does not require access to any Data Service.
MARKET EVIDENCE was designed to let you enter a few items of
data DAILY or (WEEKLY - 5 days at a time) from your keyboard.
The final SUMMARY can print-out like a technical NEWSLETTER.
MARKET EVIDENCE provides over 2 DOZEN GRAPHS for your review.
MARKET EVIDENCE was not intended to tell you to buy anything.
It helps you determine WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE MARKET TODAY.
The raw DATA required for entry can be found in many Major
Daily Newspapers and in BARRON'S business & financial weekly.
You can ENTER DATA and run the program during a lunch HOUR.
There is a DECADE of historic data available for comparison.

J. MODULE MENU - Execution
a) VIEW-RUN THE PROGRAM - Option 1 - (Generates Graph Files)
Option 1 processes the DATA from the ENTRY Files and GENERATES the
the GRAPH Files. You can VIEW the process while it is taking place.
THIS IS A MUST DO! It is necessary to RUN the Module via Option 1
EACH TIME you enter new DATA. Otherwise the Program Information
and Program Files will not be updated. If Files are not updated
then MODULE S and the GRAPHS will not be updated.
When you add Data to the FILE..then RUN Option 1 of these MODULES.
(This will result in generating the Graph files and Summary Files)
FILE MODULE
P# P
A# A, B
I# I, K
R# R
F# F
INF# K
There is no Graph...but for the
Summary...RUN Option 1 of these:
L
M
S
ENTERING DATES (See DATES)
When you View or RUN any Module, (except S), then you must have
the latest File DATE. You can check it via Option 6 or in most
cases you will be prompted to check it just before you enter it.
EDITED OR FULL VERSION
Most Modules ask if you want a FULL or EDITED version while you
Run Option 1. EDITED will be preferred most of the time except
on rare occasions when you may want to view the FULL Files that
will be generated.
WANT TO RESET THE ....
Some Modules ask if you want to reset an indicator. There are
various reasons for this. Some indexes like C.P.I. are reset
to 100 by their keepers about once a decade. Some indicators
will stray over time. Then some indicators are just a matter of
personal preference, such as the long moving average of MODULE
'A', (we use 190 day while many others use 200 day or 40 weeks).
19
J. MODULE MENU - Execution - (Continued)
b) HELP - Read File - Option 2
This Option 2 will bring up a few items about the MODULE that
are helpful from time to time.
c) FILES MENU - Enter Data - Option 3
This Option 3 will bring up the FILES MENU which is not held in
memory...so give it a few seconds to come in from disk.
d) NOT USED - Option 4
e) MAIN MENU - Return To - Option 5
This Option 5 will bring up the MAIN MENU which is not held in
memory...so give it a few seconds to come in from disk.
f) DATE OF FILE - CHECK - Option 6
This Option 6 will check the LATEST FILE DATE for the MODULE or
or GRAPH without running the Module. You may want to skip in
and check the DATE then skip back to another MODULE.
g) GRAPH MENU - See It - Option 7
This Option 7 will bring up a GRAPH MENU listing the available
Graphs for the MODULE.
h) EXIT From The Program - Option 8
This Option 8 will allow an exit to DOS from the MODULE..BUT it
is better to return to the MAIN MENU and EXIT.
20
K. MODULES-INDIVIDUAL - (Option 1)
a) Running The Module
MODULE 'P' (Running Option 1) ...............................
DATE
Module P will ask if you want to check the LATEST file DATE
before prompting you to ENTER the date. Better to check it.
RESET OSCILLATOR
Next the prompt will ask if you want to RESET the Atlanta Osc.
We suggest that you do not reset anything until you have the
feel for the numbers. If you answer yes...however, then you
will be shown 6 numbers and asked to RESET 4 of the numbers.
EDITED OR FULL VERSION
The prompt will ask if you want a EDITED or FULL version as
you Run MODULE P. EDITED will be preferred most of the time
except on occasions when you may want to view the FULL OUTPUT.
LAST A/D NUMBER
The Advance Decline Line is accumulative (keeps adding on or
subtracting off of a running total). If you start fresh or
SPLIT a file, (without saving the last reading), the index
will begin rising or falling from a starting number of 5000.
NOTE: Most of the time...you will just type S to skip it.
LAST SUMMATION NUMBER
The Mclellan Summation index is accumulative (keeps adding on
or subtracting off of a running total). If you start fresh or
SPLIT a file, (without saving the last reading), the index
will begin calculating from 0 and produce what ever number
results several days later. If you are not a pureist then
skip it
NOTE: Most of the time...you will just type S to skip it.
SAVING - CREATING - FILES
Three times you will be asked if you want to save a file. If
you have entered new data through Option 3 AND this is the
FIRST time you have run the MODULE..then be sure to save them.
If you have run the MODULE and saved everything recently then
you can save or not save...as you choose.
The 3 prompts are: Do you want to save data to the file M-Osc.
Do you want to save data to the file P-....
Do you want to save results to Summary file.
21
26
MODULE 'A' ( Running Option 1) ..............................
DATE
Module A will ask if you want to check the LATEST file DATE
before prompting you to ENTER the date. Better to check it.
RESET THE PERIODS
Next the prompt will ask if you want to RESET Average Periods
We suggest that you do not reset anything until you have the
feel for the numbers. If you answer yes...however, then you
will be prompted to ENTER a number for the long period...then
a number for the medium period...then one for the long period.
(Present settings are for 35, 65, and 190 days. Some people
use 200 days and some use 40 weeks...(number not so critical).
WHICH INDEX
The prompt will ask you to enter the NUMBER of the INDEX that
you want to analyze. 1. Dow Jones Industrials
2. Standard & Poors 500
3. New York Stock Exch.
4. Willshire 5000 Average
NOTE: The GRAPH 3-Averages is set up for 3. NYSE but is
not scaled for the others. All other Graphs should be
satisfactory with any of the above. If you run 1,2 or
4 then run MODULE A again using 3. NYSE and save only
3 Averages File the 2nd time.
EDITED OR FULL VERSION
The prompt will ask if you want a EDITED or FULL version as you
Run MODULE A. EDITED will be preferred most of the time except
on those occasions when you may want to view the FULL OUTPUT.
FILE SAVE
After the Data File is READ and ratios are displayed, a WAIT
sign will be followed by a sign saying saving Broadmkt. This is
an automatic save so do not disrupt it.
RUN THE NV INDEX
The prompt will then ask if you want to see the NV index. This
is the ACCUMULATION INDEX. Two files will be read and they must
be the same dates to work properly. When you choose to run the
Accumulation index, the latest file dates for both the A# and
the P# Files will be displayed. When you check a file, it is
displayed on the left middle of the screen. BOTH the PREFIX
and the DATE are displayed. Pay attention only to the date.
If both dates are the same then answer yes and run the file. If
not...answer no to skip this Index.
22

MODULE 'L' (Running Option 1) ................................
PURPOSE
This MODULE 'L' does not generate a graph but does generate a
a Summary File for use in the MODULE 'S' printout.
NOTE: The Support Lines that are generated via Option 1 are not
the lines that are normally discussed. These are Historic
lines that are interesting when things a little terrible.
NOTE: Option 2 is D.J.I.A. going back to 1974 and Option 3 is
D.J.I.A. going back to 1982. D.J.I.A. is older than the
other Indexes...it is not necessarily any better. Options
4 and 6 are for same dates with other Indexes.
NOTE: The Option 7 is available to you to determine on your own
where major support lies at any given time.
NOTE: The Option H is a list of some significant lows and their
dates.
NOTE: File A# contains Closing Values. While many people use an
Inter-day value for the low, it is splitting hairs. You
can use the Closing Values for the Lows with little loss
of accuracy, (if any).
MODULE 'F' (Running Option 1) ................................
DATE - MONTHLY FILE
Module 'F' uses File F# which is a MONTHLY file with the DATA
entered the last Friday of the Month via Option 3, (Could just
as well be on the first Friday).
Option 1 generates a Dollar File based on the 4 currency model.
Module 'F' will ask if you want to check the LATEST file DATE
before prompting you to ENTER the date.......better to check it.
NOTE: (IMPORTANT) A monthly file uses a 4 digit DATE, (YYMM)
2 digits for the year and 2 digits for month.
NOTE: Option 2 is used WEEKLY to generate a Dollar value for
the Summary report of MODULE 'S'.
26
MODULE 'F' (Running Option 1) (Continued) ....................
EDITED OR FULL VERSION
The prompt will ask if you want a EDITED or FULL version as you
Run MODULE F. EDITED will be preferred most of the time except
on those occasions when you may want to view the FULL OUTPUT.
SAVING GRAPH DATA TO FILE
A prompt will ask if you want to save the GRAPHIC File to disk.
- Save Data to the Graphic File ? (Answer Yes or No)
Answer yes if new DATA has been added to the file via Option 3.
SAVING DATA TO SUMMARY FILE
A prompt will ask if you want to save results to Summary file.
- Save the Results to Summary File? (Answer Yes or No)
Answer yes if new DATA has been added to the file via Option 3.
MODULE 'K' (Running Option 1) ................................
The MENU for MODULE 'K' is different from any other MODULE MENU
NOTE: Option's 1, 2 and 8 each generate a GRAPHIC File.
NOTE: HELP has been moved from Option 1 to Option 4 and EXIT
has been moved from Option 8 to Option E.
DATE - MONTHLY FILE
Module 'K' uses File INF# which is a MONTHLY file with the DATA
entered the Friday following the day of issue by the U.S. Govt.
(Also the Data always lags by at least one month).
Module 'K' will ask if you want to check the LATEST file DATE
before prompting you to ENTER the date.......better to check it.

NOTE: (IMPORTANT) A monthly file uses a 4 digit DATE, (YYMM)
2 digits for the year and 2 digits for month.
EDITED OR FULL VERSION
The prompt will ask if you want a EDITED or FULL version as you
Run MODULE K. EDITED will be preferred most of the time except
on those occasions when you may want to view the FULL OUTPUT.

MODULE 'K' (Running Option 1) (Continued) ....................
SAVING DATA TO SUMMARY FILE
A prompt will ask if you want to save results to Summary file.
- Save the Results to Summary File? (Answer Yes or No)
Answer yes if new DATA has been added to the file via Option 3.
NOTE: Option 2 prompts run in the same order as Option 1 but
the DATE for Option 2 is weekly and six digits (YYMMDD).
The DATA File used is the I# File. A GRAPHIC File and a
Summary File are generated.
EDITED OR FULL VERSION (See Option 1)
SAVING GRAPH DATA TO FILE
Next the prompt asks:
1. Save to Disk
2. Print on Printer
3. Print to Screen
Choose Number 1 to save for GRAPHIC File if DATA has been
added via the Option 3.
SAVING DATA TO SUMMARY FILE (See Option 1)
NOTE: Option 8 prompts are slightly different, since two files
are used. The prompt asks to check and enter DATE of the
1st File then asks again to check and enter the DATE of
the 2nd File. (1st File is WEEKLY, 6 digit (YYMMDD) and
2nd file is MONTHLY, 4 digit (YYMM).
WANT TO RESET THE BASE
The prompt first asks if you want to reset the dollar
Base. Best to answer No unless you want to play with
the numbers. If you answer yes, then you will be asked
to enter a new BASE DATE and a new BASE CPI and a new AU.
EDITED OR FULL VERSION (See Option 1)
SAVING GRAPH DATA TO FILE
Next the prompt asks:
1. Save to Disk
2. Print on Printer
3. Print to Screen
Choose Number 1 to save for GRAPHIC File if DATA has been
added via the Option 3.
SAVING DATA TO SUMMARY FILE (See Option 1)
28
MODULE 'M' (Running Option 1) ................................
NO DATA FILE
MODULE 'M' requires DIRECT ENTRY of 8 DATA items since there
is no DATA File. A Summary File is then generated. Option 7
is not active since there is no GRAPH File.
Option 1 asks you to DIRECTLY enter 8 DATA Items to help find
the upper limits of value for S&P-500 Index using an earnings
or dividends model. Also tells if interest rates are negative
using inflation data from MODULE K. If you make an entry error,
entering ZERO should get you out of a jam and back to the MENU.
Option 2 will permit you to test only the dividend relationship.
This Option also asks you to DIRECTLY enter 3 DATA Items.
MODULE 'S' (Running Option 1) ................................
Option 1 will display a SUMMARY of the output from all of the
other MODULES. Option 4 will print the SUMMARY to some printers.
Be sure to run DOS 'GRAPHICS' and have your printer turned ON.
NOTE: The MODULE 'S' menu colors are the same as the MAIN MENU.
Always check the MODULE NAME at top of Menu when in doubt.
NOTE: Options 3 and 7 are not active there is no DATA File and
no GRAPHIC File.
NOTE: Option 6 shows the full directory rather than just a date.
29
31
L. GRAPH MENU - Execution
a) GRAPH .... - Option __
Option 1 will show the first GRAPH listed on the GRAPH MENU.
Option 2 will show the second GRAPH listed on the GRAPH MENU.
etc.....
Option B will take you BACK to the MODULE MENU
ENTERING DATES (See DATES)
When you View most GRAPHS, (some exceptions), you will be asked
for latest File DATE. In all cases you will be prompted to
check it ... before you enter it. It is a Good idea to do it.
DOTS OFF OR ON
In some cases you will be asked if you want the DOTS ON or OFF.
The dots are simply dotted lines that help to read some GRAPHS.
Try it both ways to see which one you like.
DO YOU WANT TO MOVE GRAPH UP OR DOWN
Normally the answer is no. If the graph goes off the top of
the screen then you can increase the NUMBER SCALE on left side
while moving the graph down. Remember as number scale increases
(goes up)...the graph line is adjusted (down).
IF YOU ARE ASKED...Do You Want First 312 Dates
Then your file is over one screen width long and you are being
asked if you want to see the first part of the file or the last
part of the file. In most cases you will answer NO, since the
last part is the latest information.
TO RETURN TO GRAPH MENU
You can hit ANY KEY to return to the GRAPH MENU when finished
viewing a graph.
NOTE: Option 7 of MODULE 'F' brings up a GRAPH MENU on which
Option 5 (The Dollar) will bring up the following prompt:
WANT TO ALSO USE THE WEEKLY DOLLAR SUMMARY? (Yes or No).
This FILE is kept MONTHLY but the SUMMARY is kept WEEKLY
(or Daily), so by adding this bit of information to the
GRAPH you will have a picture of the latest activity.

N. WHEN TO UPDATE THE FILES
The TIME for updating entry FILES is shown by a symbol on right of MENU.
THE SYMBOLS ARE:
* DAILY-WEEKLY + WEEKLY @ BI-WEEKLY
# MONTHLY = YEARLY : NOT REQUIRED
Some FILES are DAILY-WEEKLY which means that they are DAILY files but can
be updated either DAILY, (1 day at a time) or WEEKLY, (5 days at a time).
All other FILES require 1 set of DATA at a time frequency as indicated.
33
N. FILES MENU - Execution
a) ENTER DATA IN FILE - OPTION 1
The MAIN MENU Code shows when each of the files need to be updated.
Choose the appropriate number or letter shown by the Module Part
with the File to be updated. This will bring up a Module Menu.
Then Choose Option 3 on the Module Menu to bring up the File Menu.
Then Choose Option 1 on the File-Menu and when asked, check date
of the existing file to be updated. (See DATES)
Option 1 Prompts you to look up latest file date .. Yes or No.
It is good to get into a habit of checking the latest file date
since it is possible to have a file with 2 or 3 dates.
If you forget the file date then enter a ZERO (0) and hit return.
If you enter the WRONG DATE you will get a file not found ERROR
which tells you to TYPE S TO RETURN TO THE FILE MENU.
NOTE: When you enter the latest FILE DATE there will be a WAIT
as the existing file is scanned to find the end.
HEADER LINE
A HEADER LINE will appear, showing the DATA that will be required
and the ORDER in which the data will be requested.
The HEADER reads left to right . but . the data will be requested
vertically .. one item at a time .. as follows:
ENTER DATE
ENTER ITEM A
ENTER ITEM B
ENTER ITEM C
etc
SERIES definition
When the DATE comes up the 2nd time then the first SERIES has
been completed and you can type DONE to return to the Menu.
DATE
When the prompt asks for the DATE, enter the DATE of the NEW DATA
you will enter, in correct format (YYMMDD) year first then month
then day.
IF YOU MAKE A MISTAKE BEFORE COMPLETING A SERIES:
If you enter a ZERO or a number that the program thinks is out of
order, then the file will be closed and any data entered for THAT
DATE will be flushed and you will be returned to the File-Menu).
DATE ERROR:
If you forgot to check the date, then enter a zero (0) and hit the
ENTER key. Since the Program will not accept a ZERO ... it will
flush the ZERO and tell you TYPE S KEY TO RETURN TO THE FILE MENU.
(A zero will be accepted in proper date form like 900102 which is
2nd day of January in 1990).
34
O. FILES MENU - Execution - (Continued)
a) ENTER DATA IN FILE - OPTION 1 (continued)
DATE also offers the opportunity to end data entry by typing
DONE at the DATE prompt.
The prompt will then continue by asking for item A as described
in the HEADER located above the prompt.
Enter the correct DATA as requested in the header under item A.
Entering a ZERO (0) will flush both DATE and ITEM A and return
to the FILE MENU.
The prompt will then continue by asking for ITEM B as described
in the HEADER located above the prompt.
Proceed as under ITEM A above.
The prompt will then continue by asking for ITEM C as described
in the HEADER located above the prompt.
Proceed as under ITEM A above
The prompt will then continue by asking for item D as described
in the HEADER located above the prompt.
Proceed as under ITEM A above.
When the DATE comes up the 2nd time then the first SERIES has
been completed.
DATE also offers the opportunity to end data entry by typing
DONE at the DATE prompt...to return to the file menu.
If you wish to enter another SERIES of DATA, then enter the next
DATE and continue entering the next ITEM A etc.
ENDING DATA ENTRY
Remember to END DATA ENTRY just type DONE at the DATE prompt
and you will be returned to the FILE MENU.
NOTE: Before returning to the file menu you will be asked if
you want to CHANGE DATE OF FILE. This a good time to
update the FILE DATE to the last DATA DATE you have just
entered. (Also see Option 3)
At the FILE MENU you can choose to use one of the other file
Options or RETURN to the MODULE MENU with Option 5. Also
Option 5 at the MODULE MENU will RETURN you to the MAIN MENU.
35
O. FILES MENU - Execution - (Continued)
b) READ THE WHOLE FILE - Option 2
Option 2 is used to read the whole file. This is handy if you
make a mistake and BAD DATA gets into the file. You can find
where the error is and find the date just prior to the error.
(The date just PRIOR TO ERROR is used with Option 4 FIX ERROR)
Also used to find how many entries are in the file...to tell how
large the file is growing.
Option 2 will let you enter a FILE DATE and READ the ENTIRE FILE.
When prompt asks for the DATE, then...enter DATE of the NEW DATA
you will enter, in correct format (YYMMDD) year first then month
then day.
When the file starts scrolling then you can hit the PAUSE - BREAK
key to stop and look things over.
c) CHANGE THE DATE OF THE FILE - Option 3
Option 3 - Change date of the file is not used too often since the
FILE DATE is normally updated at the end of the DATA ENTRY routine.
Option 3 will ask for the EXISTING FILE DATE and then ask for the
NEW FILE DATE and after you enter the data, will make the change.
d) FIX AN ERROR IN THE FILE - Option 4
Option 4 - Fix An Error In The File is used when BAD DATA gets
into the file and must be removed.
REMEMBER: When entering DATA if you find you have made an error
before you hit the ENTER KEY (RETURN), then you can
back up with the backspace key and wipe it out.
If you have already hit the ENTER KEY, BUT there are
still ITEMS to be entered in the SERIES, then simply
enter a ZERO (0). This will cause the Program to
detect an ERROR and flush the series, returning you
to the FILE MENU.
36
36
-
O. FILES MENU - Execution - (Continued)
d) FIX AN ERROR IN A FILE - Option 4 (CONTINUED)
Fix an Error - Option 4 will ask FIRST for the EXISTING FILE DATE
THEN it will ask for the LAST DATE BEFORE the DATE of the ERROR.
Your best bet is to go to Option 2 - READ THE FILE .. BEFORE using
Option 4 - FIX AN ERROR. Find the ERROR, then find the DATE of
the ERROR, then find the LAST DATE BEFORE the DATE of the ERROR.
Then .. WRITE IT DOWN! The EXISTING FILE DATE .. the LAST DATE
BEFORE the ERROR .. and the CORRECT DATA. Now .. you are READY.
After you have entered the EXISTING FILE DATE, then the LAST DATE
BEFORE the DATE of ERROR, then you will have a WAIT as the Program
SEARCHES for the DATES.
Soon the the HEADER will come up on the screen. This is the same
HEADER as the ENTRY HEADER and entry is in the same manner.
Start with the DATA DATE and enter all DATA for that DATE. DO not
default. Only one SERIES of DATA will be corrected at a time.
If you have a 2nd ERROR then use Option 4 a 2nd time, do not try
to correct more than the errors in one SERIES at a time. Go slow,
have patience... and it will do the trick.
e) RETURN TO MODULE MENU - Option 5
This is exactly what it says ... a way to get back to the Program
MODULE MENU. Also at the MODULE MENU you can use Option 5 to get
back to the MAIN MENU.
Most likely when you return to the MODULE MENU you will want the
Option 1 to RUN the Program MODULE to generate or update the GRAPH
Files. You also have access through MODULE MENU to the GRAPH MENU
via Option 7.
37
O. FILES MENU - Execution - (Continued)
f) READ THE FILE DIRECTORY - Option 6
On occasion you will want to check the FILES DIRECTORY without
going through one of the other options. This is the place to do
it .. several times if necessary.
You can HIT ANY KEY to return from the DIRECTORY to a MODULE MENU.
g) SPLIT A LONG FILE IN 2 PARTS - Option 7
This will be used occasionally to split a file that has become too
long or unwieldly for the Program to RUN. The Program MODULE
will give a message if file length becomes a problem. Unwieldly
files are long files that run slow. The shorter files are faster.
MAXIMUM LENGTH
Most LIMITS are set for about two GRAPHIC Screen widths. This can
vary between MODULES and between Files depending on the GRAPHICS
set up. (See File Length Chart)
MINIMUM LENGTH
Some files require a MINIMUM amount of DATA to RUN everything in
the program. For instance MODULE A (Moving Averages), calculates
a 190 day moving average. If you run a 100 day file, the other
parts will work .. but you will get zero for the long average.
The daily reading may be below the actual 190 day average but can
not signal it since it is seeing zero (0). (See File Length Chart)
CHECK DATES - BEFORE THE SPLIT
Use Option 2 (Read the File) before using Option 7 to split. Find
The Date Where You want the Split to occur. Then write it down!
NOTE: The DATE at the SPLIT will be the LAST DATE of the OLD PART.
The NEW PART will START with the NEXT DATE and end with the
ORIGINAL FILE DATE.
You will First be asked for the DATE of the FILE TO BE SPLIT,then
you will be asked for the DATE WHERE THE SPLIT WILL OCCUR. If the
file can not be found...wrong date etc. then you will be asked to
TYPE S TO RETURN TO FILE MENU. When you get the dates entered ok
then sit back and wait for the report.
The REPORT will tell you:
Original File has been renamed A#YYMMDD.BKP (BKP =Backup)
Oldest File is named A#YYMMDD.FIL YYMMDD=Split Date
Newest File is named A#YYMMDD.FIL YYMMDD=Original Date
You can erase the the original backup file with the DOS command
DELete (DEL) like DEL *.BKP
38
O. FILES MENU - Execution - (Continued)
h) COMBINE 2 FILES INTO 1 - Option 8
You may never need this but it is here if you do. If you found
that you split a file in the wrong place.. then you could COMBINE
with this Option 8.
NOTE: They must be a # type file...that is P#,A#,I#,R# and match
the type as shown on the top of the File Menu. Do not try
to manipulate a type A# file when you are in the MODULE P#
FILE MENU...you can not do it. Get in the correct MODULE
and take Option 3 to the correct FILE MENU.
The prompt will ask you FIRST for the OLDEST FILE DATE. (It is
important to get it right or the DATES will be out of order and
it will be necessary to split it again). NEXT, it will ask for
the NEWEST FILE DATE. Enter it, then sit back and wait until it
tells you to HIT A KEY TO RETURN TO THE FILES MENU.
i) EXIT FROM THE PROGRAM - Option E
This exit will take you out of the program and to the DOS prompt.
NOTE: It is better to use Option 5 to return to the MODULE MENU
and then use Option 5 again and return to the MAIN MENU.
At the MAIN MENU you can choose Option E to EXIT properly.
This prompt will check by asking ARE YOU SURE THAT YOU WANT EXIT?
39
